Your kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house.
Between preparing food, making meals, and sharing dinners, it gets its fair share of hard use. Within your kitchen alone there are a variety of different appliances that together can result in a number of different issues.
With all the time that you spend in your kitchen, it can be frustrating when problems arise that you don’t know how to fix. Some issues may require professional attention but a lot of them are actually easy fixes.
These are five of the most common kitchen problems with solutions to either save your day or at least give your maintenance man a clearer idea of what the problem is.
1. Smelly Drainage
When you start noticing some foul smells coming up from your sink, it could be either an issue with it not draining or just needing a little bit of deodorizing.
Using a homemade drain cleaning solution such as baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water can help dislodge any build-up in your sink.
To further cover up any unpleasant smells, you can throw common food scraps such as orange or lemon peels into your garbage disposal and turn it on with running water.
This will leave your drain smelling like a citrusy fruit salad instead!
2. Under or Overcooking Oven
If you are noticing that your pies are taking a little bit longer to bake than usual or your cookies are burning in half the time than they normally do, you may be having an issue with your oven’s temperature calibration.
Rather than going out to buy a brand new appliance, get an oven thermometer and check the temperature settings. You may just find that all it needs is a re-calibration.
3. Refrigerator Seeming Warm
Your refrigerator keeps perishable food in a cool environment.
If your fridge isn’t maintaining a cool temperature this can lead to food waste or illness if products drop below a safe temperature. If your fridge seems warmer than usual, make sure that the doors are closing completely and that there are no issues with a dirty or torn seal. Additionally, you should look for any unusual heat, drips, or noises.
4. Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes
An easy fix to a dishwasher not cleaning well is that it may need to be cleaned itself! You can clean the spray arm, filter, and float as well as run it through a hot-water cycle with a cup of white vinegar to remove grease, grime, and any odors that may be disrupting it.
5. Sticking Drawers
To fix a sticking drawer, first, make sure that the tracks are clear from any obstructions. Wash the runners with dish soap and then add a bit of lubricant such as olive oil or a bar of soap.
It’s imperative to have your kitchen in working order and excellent condition. So the next time you are faced with one of these common kitchen problems, know how to fix it yourself with these methods to avoid a costly maintenance bill!
